'Pieces': Taylor Sheridan "Had His Hand In" Taylor Kitsch's Upcoming Detroit Drug Run Film

Taylor Kitsch’s Hollywood career is full of highs and lows. He started as the star of Peter Berg’sFriday Night Lights” series on NBC and a teen heartthrob in 2006’s “Josh Tucker Must Die.” But his venture into blockbusters didn’t go well, as 2012’s “John Carter” floundered with critics and audiences alike. Between then and his most recent role in “The Terminal List,” out on Amazon Prime now, he’s had more minor roles in smaller movies, and some memorable performances on TV, like “Waco” and “True Detective” Season Two.

But what’s Kitsch up to after “The Terminal List”? It looks like he’ll star in his feature directing debut, “Pieces,” a project first announced back in 2016. Kitsch also writes the upcoming movie, based on an earlier short he made, about three friends in Detroit who get more than they bargained for when they accidentally intercept a drug run. “I’ve seen enough where I’m excited to take my own swing,” Kitsch told Variety about the project. And Kitsch has Berg on board as a producer, but another intriguing name is also involved, “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan. Kitsch confirmed that Sheridan “had his hand in it” when it came to “Pieces” getting the green light, but he didn’t disclose how. Did Sheridan help write the script, or is he on board as a producer like Berg?

What’s most intriguing is that Berg and Sheridan have worked together before. Berg co-produced two of Sheridan’s films, 2016’s “Hell Or High Water” and 2017’s “Wind River,” two crime movies that roughly fit the same mold as “Pieces.” And of course, Sheridan has a monopoly on American crime TV right now with “Yellowstone” and its many spin-offs, as well as the upcoming “Tulsa King” with Sylvester Stallone. So, is “Pieces” a Taylor Sheridan joint more than it’s a vehicle for Taylor Kitsch to spread his creative wings? Only time will tell.

In any case, Kitsch advocated that “Pieces” is his baby to Variety, and he’s proud of the work he’s done to make it happen. “I think creative control is big. And this story just won’t leave my brain, to be honest with you. I spent a while writing it, and I’m really proud of it.” No word on when “Pieces” goes into production yet, but expect something with not just Kitsch’s fingerprints on it, but Taylor Sheridan’s, too.  Catch Kitsch in “The Terminal List” on Amazon Prime now.
