Got a Tip?

‘Players’ Trailer: Rom-Com With Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayons Jr. & Tom Ellis Premieres On Netflix This Valentine’s Day

Is the rom-com genre in a Renaissance period? Maybe, maybe not, but “Anyone But You” did alright with critics late last year, and so did “No Hard Feelings,” “Rye Lane,” and even “She Came To Me.” So of course Netflix wants in on the action with “Players,” its latest genre entry that’s ready to premiere on Valentine’s Day next month.

But to stay fresh in a tired genre, “Players” needs a memorable premise, and maybe it has one. In the film, Gina Rodriguez plays a sportswriter who’s an expert in hook-up culture who suddenly finds herself falling for NYC’s most eligible bachelor. Is she ready to change the way she plays the game?

Here’s an official synopsis for “Players,” courtesy of Netflix:

New York sportswriter Mack has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship from a play. When Mack unexpectedly falls for her latest target, charming war correspondent Nick, she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps.

Along with Rodriguez, “Players” stars Damon Wayans Jr.Tom EllisJoel CourtneyAugustus Prew, and Liza Koshy.  Ego Nwodim and Marin Hinkle also star.

Trish Sie directs “Players” from a script by Whit Anderson. Producers on the film include Ross M. DinersteinMarc PlattAdam Siegel, and Ryan Christians. Executive producers include Ross GirardSophia Lin, Gina Rodriguez, and Molly Breeskin.
