Got a Tip?

Producer Adi Shankar Says ‘Dredd’ Sequel Probably Won’t Happen, But A Short Film Is In The Works

nullWhen “Dredd” came out last September, it was by all accounts a box office misfire. Despite a mostly positive critical response and fanboy approval, audiences in general did not seem to want to flock to the 3D action/sci-fi film. Perhaps it was the lack of any big names, or a lackluster marketing campaign. Perhaps it was its mid-September release which does not always equal big box office numbers. So, naturally, this does not bode well for a possible sequel to the film. Adi Shankar, a producer on the film, confirmed just as much recently.

Shankar appeared on Reddit last week to answer questions as part of an IAmA when he was a user asked if there would ever be a “Dredd” sequel. “Probably not. But I am working on a Dredd short in the vein of #DirtyLaundry… you’re actually the first person to know about this…” But what, dirty laundry? He’s making a movie about cleaning clothes. Nah…

In case you forgot, “Dirty Laundry” was essentially a 10-minute unofficial “Punisher” fan film made by and starring Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman. It was unveiled at Comic-Con last summer to some fanfare and quickly landed online not long after (you can watch it right here). Given the enthusiastic response to the short, a “Dredd” mini movie may actually be worth watching. Nevertheless, it must be disappointing for fans of “Dredd” hoping to see the character in a new big screen franchise. But hey, there’s always Kickstarter right? [via AICN]
