Got a Tip?

Producer Says ‘Inherent Vice’ Hoping To Shoot In Spring 2013; PTA Says Certain Scripted Scenes For ‘The Master’ Were Never Shot

nullOkay, so "The Master" may end up losing money for Harvey Weinstein and Megan Ellison, but it did earn it's fair share of acclaim, and three Oscar nominations for its lead trio of Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams is nothing to sneeze at either. And while one can sit around and talk about why or why not the film didn't catch on the way "There Will Be Blood" did, Paul Thomas Anderson is already moving with "Inherent Vice," reteaming with Phoenix after Robert Downey Jr. passed. And though fans have patiently awaited longer and longer gaps between PTA films, it looks like his next is gearing up very quickly.

The guys over at Cigarettes & Red Vines recently chatted with producer JoAnne Sellar who revealed "Inherent Vice" is coming fast. "We're just putting the financing together and the plan is to start shooting in late April," Sellar said. "Everything should be [underway] very soon in order to start shooting then: late April/early May kinda thing."

Adapted from the novel by Thomas Pynchon, the '60s set movie is another gear change for the director, a drug fueled tale of a private investigator looking into a kidnapping scheme in Los Angeles. And while Charlize Theron was tipped as a possible co-star, there's no word yet on who else will be cast alongside Phoenix, but we're likely to know more soon.

Meanwhile, "The Master" is still offering a lot to uncover, and as we detailed not too long ago, there were some changes between the early script (it should be noted the one on The Weinstein Company awards site is not the shooting version) and the finished movie. But as Paul Thomas Anderson told the fansite via email, some of those scenes were simply cut or not shot at all. "Nothing massively shifted in the editing room. No large structural shift or anything like that….it was more asking questions about what's in and what's out….playing with versions of the film that elminated scenes to see it's effect on the whole thing," he wrote. "The interview with Freddie [in the first teaser trailer] was one of three that we shot. Questions arise, like: how many more interviews are we going to see with him and a VA Doctor…….zzzzzzzz…….this leads to a cut."

It seems Anderson is not so interested in exploring why some scenes did and didn't make it, and more interesting tangents like a visit to Freddie Quell's cousin Bob, and a dream sequence where he cuts off The Master's head, didn't end up on camera. "Oh that stuff was long ago," Anderson said of those scenes. "I still hope Cousin Bob will show up in a story I write someday. All that stuff with alligators in sewers was stolen from Pynchon's 'V.' We looked around some sewers in upstate New York [and] eventually decided to ditch the whole story line in writing before spending money and time on something unnecessary to the Main Event. Freddie daydreaming about cutting Master's head was an OK idea….not worth pursuing. [It's] the kind of thing you get excited about for a while, then leave, never to be shot and that's fine by me."

"The Master" arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray on February 26th and packaged with a new short film entitled "Unguided Message," it seems PTA still has more surprises up his sleeve.
