‘Prom’ First Look: Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington & More Star In Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Musical

When it was announced, Ryan Murphy’s forthcoming musical film, “Prom,” sported an insanely talented cast, led by Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, and more, and seemed like a surefire hit for Netflix. However, just three days before the film was done with production, COVID struck and everything was shut down. Luckily for film fans, especially those who enjoy the bright, colorful worlds that Ryan Murphy creates, “Prom” was able to finish production four months later and is now being prepped for a December release.

As seen in the first look photos from THR, “Prom” is based on the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name and is inspired by a real-life situation where a lesbian teen was told she couldn’t bring her girlfriend to prom due to the school’s conservative values. Obviously, this is a project that is near and dear to Murphy and something that attracted plenty of talented actors, who are happy to tackle a film about such a worthwhile subject.

While it may not be incredibly shocking to see Streep star in a musical film, as she has previously worked on “Mamma Mia!” However, “Prom” does call for the legendary actress to be a bit of a diva, and Streep took this as an opportunity to really crank up her “asshole”-ness.

“This is based on a real thing that happened to kids in Indiana, and has a happy ending, everything we dream of in 2020,” she said. “I wanted to do it. So, the character is a big asshole. I tried very hard to bring that part of me forward.”

The film is led by a newcomer, actress Jo Ellen Pellman, who talked about the upcoming film and said, “I think this movie shows LGBTQ kids across the world that they are worthy of a big, joyous happy ending. There are people out there, who you might not even know yet, who can’t wait to love you and support you. That’s how Emma was able to find her voice, and I think that’s how kids are going to be able to find their voices.”
