David Lynch Would "Probably Be Making A Film" Right Now If No Pandemic But Isn't Upset: "I Love Isolation"

It’s been a minute since we’ve had any solid news about what the future might hold for David Lynch. Even though the pandemic has been rough on the film industry, as a whole, Lynch has apparently thrived, as he launched a successful YouTube channel and has been vocal about his newfound artistic endeavors that have very little to do with actual filmmaking. And in a world that is in dire need of good news, Lynch isn’t able to give us any right now. That being said, in an alternate universe where the COVID-19 pandemic never happened, we could be enjoying a new David Lynch film right this moment.

Speaking in an interview with PCS Literary Magazine, Lynch was asked about his time during the pandemic and how he’s holding up. Apparently, he’s actually doing well. Like really well.

“I’m in isolation. I love isolation,” Lynch said. “So, I’m not able to make films, but I’m able to paint and work on sculpture and work on my YouTube channel. And it’s pretty great. I really kind of like isolation.”

When the question about what he would be doing if there wasn’t a pandemic, Lynch explained that he’d likely be doing what his fans hope he would be doing—filmmaking.

“I don’t know for sure, but I’d be probably making a film or a continuing story,” he answered.

Now, it’s that last bit of the comment that seems to have some Lynch fans a bit confused but excited. Sure, any new film from Lynch is worthy of excitement. However, the idea of “a continuing story” sure is vague enough to imply quite a few things, including the possibility of a return to “Twin Peaks.”

As has previously been discussed, Lynch has never closed the door on more “Twin Peaks.” In fact, the actors involved have basically all said they’d be willing to do whatever Lynch wants, as long as the idea is something that the filmmaker wants to do. And if you’re a fan of the filmmaker, then it’s a high probability that “Twin Peaks” is a huge reason for that.

Of course, it’s unclear when the pandemic will pass and Lynch will feel comfortable enough to leave isolation. Considering Lynch talks about isolation like a typical person talks about their first love, it’s not a guarantee that he will ever return. That being said, in a year filled with disappointment on a massive scale, we need hope. And with that in mind, let’s hold on to the idea that the filmmaker is just waiting for this all to pass so that he can go out and continue to fill the world with his wonderful moving pictures.
