“Nothing has changed in education in 100 years. But it turns out these kids are really smart.” Based on a 2013 Wired Magazine article, “A Radical Way of Unleashing a Generation of Geniuses,” and the true story of educator Sergio Juárez Correa, “Radical” stars Eugenio Derbez (“CODA,” “Overboard”) as a teacher who sets out to inspire his students and change the modes of education in a small violence-ridden Mexican border town.
As shown in the trailer, he removes all of the desks in the classroom, including his own, tampers the sound of the school bell, and encourages the children to embrace their own curiosity and intuition. The tone of “Radical” seems to be similar to “Stand and Deliver” and “To Sir, With Love,” mixing together social realism and cute comedy. The movie is centered around the performance of Derbez, and with his appearance in the Oscar-winning “CODA,” it has been proven that the actor has the sensitivity and warmth necessary for the role of an inspirational teacher.

‘Radical” was written and directed by Christopher Zalla, known for the award-winning “Blood of My Blood.” It was produced by Derbez’s production company 3PAS Studios. Earlier in the year, the movie received its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive critical reviews and won the festival’s “Fan Favorite Award.” The Playlist’s own Alani Vargas referred to it as “heartfelt, but flawed.”
