At long last, a new Alex Ross Perry will hit theaters this year. But when will “Range Life: A Pavement Story” (formerly titled “Pavements“) reach audiences in 2025? Well, nobody knows yet. But a new teaser from Utopita hints that the music doc/biopic hybrid about the acclaimed indie band, dubbed by Perry as a “semiotic experiment,” will be out in 2025. That’s good news for Perry fans, as he hasn’t had a feature film in theaters in 2019’s “Her Smell.”
“Range Life” had a buzzy world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last Fall, with critics (including The Playlist’s Marshall Schaffer) raving about the film. So mark this one down as one of 2025’s most anticipated movies:
Here’s an official synopsis for “Range Life,” courtesy of the Venice Film Festival:
An examination of the iconic 1990s indie band Pavement appears to be just another music documentary—until it isn’t. A prismatic hybrid of narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, and metatextual forms, the film intimately shows the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history, and a big-budget Hollywood biopic inspired by their saga as the most important band of a generation.
Along with Keery and Schwartzman, “Range Life” also stars Nat Wolff, Fred Hechinger, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, and Tim Heidecker. Michael Esper, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Kathryn Gallagher round out the main cast. Pavement’s original members, as well as Kim Gordon, Lindsey Jordan, Soccer Mommy, and Perry star in the documentary parts of the film.
Perry writes the screenplay for “Range Life” along with directing. He also leads producers with Craig Butta, Robert Greene, Danny Gabai, and Arrow Kruse via Alldayeveryday. Other producers include Patrick Amory, Gerard Cosloy, Chris Lombardi, and Gabe Spierer also produce via Matador Records, Lance Bangs via Field Recordings, and Peter Kline and Alex Needles via Ww7 Entertainment.
As noted earlier, “Range Life” had its world premiere at Venice last September. Check out The Playlist’s B+ review of the film here, and check out a new teaser for the film below.
