Today is International Women’s Day, and what better day to share this new trailer for the upcoming Ruth Bader Ginsburg doc “RBG?” Ginsburg has become something of a pop culture icon in the last decade, with t-shirts, pins, memes, and a her very own SNL character, played by Kate McKinnon. Needless to say, it was about time we got a full-length doc based on the Supreme Court Justice.
For those thinking that “RBG” would be a paint-by-numbers retelling of Ginsburg’s life, you’re misinformed. From the footage seen in the trailer, “RBG” looks to take a look at Ginsburg’s life, but also her incredible effect on the U.S., as well as pop culture. She even throws in a couple jokes, while also doing pushups. As one person in the trailer says, Ginsburg is the closest thing she’s seen to a real life superhero.
The film is directed and produced by Betsy West and Julie Cohen. This is the first feature for West, but Cohen is known for the documentaries “The Sturgeon Queens” and “American Veteran.” “RBG” had it’s world premiere at Sundance, where it was generally loved by critics, and Ginsburg herself was on-hand, quickly becoming the hottest celebrity at the festival.
The film is being released by Magnolia Pictures, in conjunction with Participant Media and CNN films. “RBG” is scheduled to be released in select theaters May 4.
