“The Pit” is an odd film, to say the least. It was originally released in 1981 and wasn’t a rousing success by any stretch of the imagination, but it has gained a cult following over the succeeding years due to its absurd plot and acting. Now fans of the “Canuxploitation” genre can revisit it with fresh eyes, as the film is returning to theaters in a new 2K restoration.

The premise of the only film ever directed by Lew Lehman is almost too silly to believe. Twelve-year-old Jamie is a sex-obsessed misfit who is commanded by the voice of his teddy bear to lure unsuspecting victims to a large hole in the ground. What fate meets those poor souls who fall in the pit? Well, just your run of the mill “Tra-la-logs,” which is the name he gives the monsters at the bottom. Here’s the synopsis:
Twelve-year old Jamie is one creepy kid. He has a perverse obsession with sex, his only friend is an evil teddy bear, and he’s the only one who knows about the hole in the forest where he feeds raw meat to a ravenous pack of mutant troglodytes. But Jamie will teach them all a lesson, the kids who teased him, the mean old lady down the street, even his pretty new babysitter. Soon they—and his entire town—will face the flesh-eating horror of The Pit!
If that sounds like a movie you’d be interested in seeing, or you’re one of the few fans of the film, “The Pit” starts rolling out at the end of the month. Visit Kino Lorber to see when it’s playing near you.
