The Berlin International Film Festival is just a couple of weeks away, and as always, it will provide a terrific window on some of the best world cinema has to offer. In the Main Competition programme, Sweden will be represented with “The Real Estate,” and today we’re excited to debut the compelling trailer for the film.
Directed byĀ MĆ„ns MĆ„nsson & Axel Petersen, and starringĀ LĆ©onore Ekstrand, the story follows a 68 year woman who inherits an apartment building after her father passes away. However, what seems like newfound fortune soon becomes unexpectedly complicated. Here’s the official synopsis:
After a life of decadence and living abroad on monthly allowances, 68-year-old Nojet inherits an apartment building from herĀ fatherĀ who has just died, and returnsĀ home to Stockholm, which isĀ in the middle ofĀ a housing crisis.
Inspecting the building for the first time, Nojet meets with several tenants and discovers that the apartments on the 7th floor are all under illegal black marketĀ contracts. She brings this up with Chris, her nephew andĀ managerĀ of the building. HeĀ deniesĀ anyĀ fraud, but asks Nojet to show some empathy with the poor tenants,Ā who have no other place to go due to the tough housing market.Ā
Disillusioned and clueless Nojet seeksĀ help from Lex,Ā the family lawyer, whoĀ only seesĀ two options: keep the building as it is, or sell. Either way a fast turnaround isĀ needed.
The Berlin International Film Festival runs from February 15-25. International sales will be handled by The Match Factory. “The Real Estate” opens in Sweden on March 16th.
