Rewind: Chatty Shia, Mysterious ‘Prometheus’ And The Week In Movies, June 26th-July 2nd

This week was active at The Playlist. Speculation about “Prometheus” led to a load of weird, gossipy rumors powering the film news industry leading up to the opening for “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.” Meanwhile, The Playlist produced a number of can’t-miss pieces of original content.

-“Thor 2” is coming, with a 2013 release date, and a vacant director’s chair following the departure of Kenneth Branagh. Fortunately, our Oliver Lyttleton was quick enough to suggest a couple of plausible Branagh replacements. Though, days later, our favorite off-site suggestion just may be Bernard Rose. Meanwhile, “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth will be staying busy by starring in “Shadow Rider.”

-Scuttlebutt! Controversy erupted over possible plot leaks regarding “Prometheus,” which Fox answered by releasing their own short plot synopsis. Meanwhile, screenwriter Damon Lindelof explains where “Alien” ends and “Prometheus” begins. But figuratively, since it comes before. Probably.

-We caught up with the five best performances in the career of Tom Hanks. Thankfully, we managed to include nary a mention of “Forrest Gump” because we’re not populist jerks. We also ran through the many disasters that comprise the Michael Bay filmography, not to mention taking a brief look at Louis Malle‘s massive body of work.

-Trailers! Steven Spielberg gave us the first peek at this winter’s “War Horse,” which promises lots of period dress and horsey funtimes. We also accepted the “Ghost Protocol” with the latest in the “Mission: Impossible” series, first through a dodgy bootleg before the official version surfaced*. The first trailer for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spyalso hit, while Pixar revealed a look at “Brave” and we caught another glance at “Immortals.”

-Gossips! Shia LeBeouf is a girlmagnet, if his own comments to Details prove accurate. Poor Megan Fox‘s marriage. This leaked at about the same time as a few comments made by Harrison Ford regarding the boy’s intelligence, which sound about right. Meanwhile, currently unemployed Thomas Jane speculated about the potency of Sylvester Stallone‘s sexual organ, while Uwe Boll decided to trash Terrence Malick, Lars Von Trier and Michael Bay.

-It turns out that “Snow White And The Huntsman” is going to be a trilogy. Since ‘Hunstman’ will star Kristen Stewart, there was a certain sense of… ah, community in the comment section.

-And in the week’s biggest article, judging by reader reaction, it was revealed that Michael Bay had written a personal letter to projectionists regarding “Transformers: Dark of The Moon.” Undeterred, a representative of the Projectionist’s Guild of America shot back with class, verve and style. Who was this masked man?? And don’t forget to check out our review of the new ‘Transformers’ here.

*Though we love the comment section suggestion that Jeremy Renner was being “given” the franchise by Tom Cruise in return for not featuring in P.T. Anderson’s possibly-Scientology-bashing “The Master.”
