Finally. Don’t get me wrong, I’m as on board with the new “Star Wars” movies as anybody else (except maybe “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“) but I’ve been dying for Lucasfilm to take audiences (and me) into a whole other part of the galaxy. And now they are.

It was earlier this month that Kathleen Kennedy said Lucasfilm was plotting the next decade of “Star Wars” movies, but we figured it was going to be more of the mainline saga. Maybe that’ll still happen, but it’s official, they’re going to do a brand new trilogy, with new characters from a corner of the galaxy that “Star Wars” lore has never before explored, and separate from the episodic Skywalker saga. If that’s not enough, Rian Johnson will be developing the films with with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce, and will direct the first instalment. Damn, they must really be pleased with how “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” turned out.
Just go ahead and take all my money.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on ‘The Last Jedi,’ ” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “ ‘Star Wars’ is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
The new trilogy won’t be hitting the big screen until after 2020, when the current trilogy wrap ups. No official release dates are other details have been revealed, but if this is the future of “Star Wars,” we really dig it.
