Richard Gere and Topher Grace have signed on to star in the spy thriller “The Double.”
The film, which marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Michael Brandt, who, along with his frequent writing partner Derek Hass, penned the screenplay here. The duo have previously written such films as “Wanted” and “3:10 To Yuma.” Their latest collaboration follows “the mysterious murder of a senator bearing the distinguished marks of a Soviet assassin, code-named Cassius, who was long thought to be dead. To hunt down the killer, a retired CIA operative (Gere), who spent his career going toe-to-toe with his Soviet nemeses, is teamed with a young FBI agent (Grace).”
Sounds like an interesting premise, though given Gere’s recent track record for signing onto thoroughly middling fare, we’re keeping our expectations firmly in check. The film is set to go in front of cameras this June in Detroit.
