No matter where you stand on “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” (I liked the former, detested the latter) it can’t be denied that Ridley Scott brought a lot of ideas to the table. Whether they belonged in an unasked for string of predecessors to “Alien” is a whole other debate, but certainly, you can’t fault the director for lack of ambition. Even though 20th Century Fox has yet to make a firm decision on the future of the franchise following the disappointing returns for ‘Covenant,’ Scott is ready to go if he gets the call.
The director spent most of the ‘Covenant’ press tour saying he already had the groundwork laid down for the next instalment, and it would be shooting as soon as next summer. Once again, he says he’s pretty much good to go. Intriguingly, however, he teases where he might take the story, forever unfolding a convoluted origin story.

“I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over, but what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.’s. The world that the AI might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one,” he told Empire (via Collider).
Again, this sounds like a great idea for a movie, yet maybe not for an “Alien” prequel. Though, in my own mind, I’ve already pretended these movies don’t exist in my personal universe of these movies. Scott seems pretty confident his next movie will go ahead, but I’d still prefer to see Neill Blomkamp take a crack at the franchise.
