Got a Tip?

‘Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Director Rupert Wyatt Gets Into A ‘Captive State’

Director Rupert Wyatt seems to be decidedly picky in terms of projects. After directing “The Escapist,” 20th Century Fox gave him the keys to “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes,” which he helmed to major, franchise starting success. He could have directed the sequel “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes,” but he turned down the job. Later, he also left “Gambit after the same studio didn’t quite take to his vision for the superhero flick. In the interim, he directed the underrated “The Gambler” and dipped his toes in television, helming the pilots for “Turn” and the upcoming “The Exorcist.” Now, Wyatt has another big screen project in the works.

Variety reports that Wyatt will helm the sci-fi “Captive State,” which he wrote alongside his wife Erica Beeney (“The Battle Of Shaker Heights“). Aside from that, nothing else is known about the movie, but apparently the project is hot enough that a studio deal is expected to be locked up by Labor Day. So I’d imagine around then we’ll get some word on what this is all about.

Production is slated to begin in 2017, so we’re still quite a way off from seeing “Captive State,” but Wyatt back in the saddle with an original movie is something to be excited about.
