The "Mysterious Broadcast" Teased In 'Rise Of Skywalker' Has Been Revealed...In Fortnite

To say that JJ Abrams’ newest “Star Wars” adventure, ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ follows a breakneck pace is an understatement. For those who haven’t seen it, make sure you don’t drink a lot of fluids before entering the screening because there’s literally not a good time to go on a potty break. And fans will see just how fast the film moves along from the opening crawl, which is also jam-packed with information, a couple of big revelations, and one lingering question.

And it’s that question that is likely going to hit fans over the head immediately that is something that isn’t answered throughout the runtime of ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ But never fear! Thankfully, the answer to your question has been revealed, but not in a place you’d be looking for it.

**MINOR SPOILERS for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”**

The opening crawl of ‘Rise of Skywalker’ lets you know, right off the bat, that Emperor Palpatine, long thought dead, is actually alive and wreaking havoc on the galaxy once again. How is he doing this? Well, there’s been a mysterious broadcast that has been heard by the heroes and villains of the galaxy far, far away that has alerted everyone to Palpatine’s return.

Here’s the beginning of the ‘Rise’ crawl that teases a “broadcast” from Palpatine:

“The dead speak! The galaxy has heard a mysterious broadcast, a threat of REVENGE in the sinister voice of the late EMPEROR PALPATINE.”

But what did the message say? Well, we never find out.

According to a new report from Polygon, JJ Abrams did, in fact, record the broadcast with actor Ian McDiarmid, but the message never made it to the final film, for whatever reason. Surprisingly, the broadcast has been revealed, but not in a deleted scene, a behind-the-scenes featurette, or just as a standalone audio file. Instead, the dialogue has been used in…Fortnite.

Yep, that’s right, the broadcast that sent Kylo Ren on his mission of revenge at the beginning of ‘Rise’ appeared first during an in-game “Star Wars” event that recently took place inside Fortnite.

In the game, you can clearly hear the Emperor say, “At last the work of generations is complete. The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The day of revenge. The day of the Sith!”

Clearly, this isn’t some mind-blowing reveal and will forever change your opinion on Abrams’ new film, but it is something that clearly belonged in the film…somewhere. Hell, if the filmmaker is going to pack every second of ‘Rise of Skywalker’ with exposition, twists, and reveals, why not include the very message that you reference at the very beginning of the film?

Oh well, at least “Star Wars” fans can enjoy the message in the video below.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is in theaters now.
