Robert Eggers clearly enjoys making unique and beautiful period films. Perhaps this is best showcased in his new film, “Nosferatu.” And if you were to wonder what Eggers likes to watch in his free time, based only on the films he creates, you probably wouldn’t have guessed “Home Alone.”

In a new video from Konbini, Robert Eggers talks about some of his favorite films. And when it comes to Christmas films, he ranks Chris Columbus’ “Home Alone” as a legit “masterpiece.” This is probably not all that shocking when you find out that Columbus has been his mentor since “The Witch” was released almost nine years ago.
“I also watch [‘Home Alone’] once a year,” Eggers said. “Chris Columbus has been a mentor to me since ‘The Witch.’ Seems weird, I know it, but he is incredible, and he was the main creative producer on ‘Nosferatu,’ and he was such an advocate. I think it was such a gift to have one of the masters of orthodox Hollywood storytelling be on set every single day.”

He added, “I also think that [‘Home Alone’] is a masterpiece. It’s a timeless movie. It is impeccably photographed, you know, unlike a lot of movies in this kind of genre. It’s not overshot. It is a really well-crafted film as well.”
Of course, calling “Home Alone” a Christmas masterpiece isn’t that much of a hot take. People have adored that film for decades now. Not only do people love the film, but it has also inspired countless knockoffs over the years.
Again, it is only worth mentioning because you probably wouldn’t have guessed Eggers is such a fan of the film. But hey, he’s only human and probably grew up on the film like so many other people his age.
