Got a Tip?

Robert Eggers Is Almost Done With ‘The Northman’ & Is Hoping To Begin Production On A New Film In 2022

With only two features under his belt, Robert Eggers (“The Witch“) has already proven himself to be a filmmaker willing to make bold choices and take big risks. So, it makes sense that he’d go from his arthouse psychological thriller, “The Lighthouse,” to a Viking action film like “The Northman.” But where will Eggers go next after this next big step that includes actors like Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Alexander Skarsgard, Anya Taylor-Joy, and more?

“The Northman” finally trailer arrived earlier this week, in a new interview with Collider, Eggers updated the status of the Viking drama which is scheduled to hit theaters in April, and teased what he’s up to next. Apparently, the filmmaker isn’t going to slow down anytime soon.

As for “The Northman,” even though we’re still four months away from the film hitting theaters, Eggers said that he’s close to delivering the finished product and only has one more VFX shot to finish. This means he’s ready to begin work on the next-next thing.

“When I’m in post, I’m always trying to find time to write the next thing,” teased Eggers. “I’m going to be super guarded and secretive, but I hope to be going into production with something next year.”

When asked if it’s a project that has previously been rumored, Eggers hints that it could be, if everything works out. One project that got a lot of press that didn’t seem to come together was Eggers’ remake of “Nosferatu,” which reportedly was going to see him reteam with Anya Taylor-Joy after they worked together on “The Witch.”

“It could be the project that you’re ghosting around, or it could be something new,” he added. “It just kind of depends on actor availability and all kinds of stuff.”

One thing Eggers is definitely willing to talk about is the scope of the next film on his slate. Clearly, he’s going bigger than ever before for “The Northman.” And because of that, the filmmaker is ready to take a step back and do something a bit smaller.

“I think I would prefer to do something smaller next,” Eggers said. “I would make a movie even bigger than this, as far as the experience of doing it, but I would want to have total control from the beginning. I’m very proud of the film and I’m very proud of my collaboration with the studio and everyone’s mutual support in the end, but it’s a lot harder working that way, I have to say.”

“The Northman” is set to hit theaters on April 22, 2022.
