In 2016, Matthew Vaughn brought some of his friends together and created what some would call a stereotypical underdog film. The team that Vaughn and Marv Studios brought together on “Eddie the Eagle” included Dexter Fletcher, Taron Egerton, and Matthew Margeson. Now, you’ll be thrilled to find out that the same group of people are behind the newest Vaughn-produced biopic, “Rocketman.”
This time around, though, the subject isn’t a coke-bottle glasses wearing Olympic legend, but a legend in a different right. “Rocketman” tells the story of English singer, pianist, and composer Sir Elton John.
Elton is the third most successful artist in the history of the American charts, behind only Elvis Presley and the Beatles. He has had 57 top 40 singles in the United States and he achieved seven #1 albums in the three-and-a-half-year period from 1972 to 1975 — a period of concentrated success surpassed only by the Beatles.
“Rocketman” is a musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s life, from his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. The film stars Egerton in the titular role as Elton and will be directed by Fletcher.
“Eddie the Eagle” had an uplifting and fun tone, that was combined with clever dialogue and a fantastic soundtrack of 80’s classics, which captivated audiences. While the older generation was recalling the true story of Eddie, the younger audience was inspired by his will and determination to not be knocked down when every sign is telling him to give up. We can only hope that this same energy and delicate nature of storytelling will be translated into “Rocketman.”
Featuring Jamie Bell, “Game Of Thrones” star Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard, “Rocketman” will blast into theaters on May 31, 2019. You can watch the teaser trailer below.
