‘Origin Of the Species’: Ana De Armas, Jude Law, Alicia Vikander & Daniel Brühl Assemble For Ron Howard’s Survival Thriller

The Cannes Film Festival begins this week and with that also comes the Cannes Film Market, as you might suspect it’s an industry marketplace where various film projects are out to potential buyers, financiers, and distributors. One of those movies on the auction block is director Ron Howard‘s survival thriller “Origin of The Species” based on two different accounts of a true story.

According to Deadline, Howard has put together quite an impressive cast including Ana de Armas (“Blonde“) coming off her recent Best Actress nomination at the 2023 Oscars, Jude Law (“Peter Pan & Wendy“), Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina“), and Daniel Brühl (“All Quiet On The Western Front“). “Origin of The Species” will focus on a group of people who decide to flee regular modern society to start new lives on the Galapagos, where Charles Darwin famously wrote his book of the same name that outlined the theory of evolution based on the animal life on the isolated islands.

Here is how Deadline’s synopsis is describing the upcoming film:

“A darkly comic tale of murder and survival, set around a group of eclectic characters who abandon civilization for the Galapagos. They are all searching for the answer to that ever-pressing question that plagues us all: what is the meaning of life.”

Some of Howard’s recent directorial efforts include the “Star Wars” prequel film “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Thirteen Lives,” the latter a harrowing tale of the daunting task to rescue a group of children trapped in a flooded cave system in Thailand. Filming on the dark comedy is expected to take place in Queensland, Australia later this year with a script that hails from “Tetris” screenwriter Noah Pink.

Sales will be handled by CAA Media Finance and AGC Studios, who are also financing the project.
