Forget the Oscars. And we all know those Golden Globes were downright terrible. The real awards have already been given – the Golden Tomatoes. That’s right, it’s that time of year again, where Rotten Tomatoes (Everyone’s favorite review aggregator that has never been the subject of any controversy. Nope, not once.) gives out its awards for the films and TV shows that have received the best reviews of the year.
Unlike other awards, RT doesn’t treat all films and TV shows the same. The site breaks the films down into Wide Releases and Limited Releases (as well as some more niche categories), while TV is broken down into New and Returning Series categories.

Leading the way on the wide release side of the film industry is the critically-acclaimed “Black Panther” with a ridiculously high 97% Fresh rating, based on 443 reviews, where only 14 were negative. We’re sure that Kevin Feige and the good folks over at Marvel Studios will gladly accept this award in lieu of Oscar gold next month.
In limited release, Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” leads the way, with its 96% Fresh rating (based on 312 reviews), narrowly besting “Leave No Trace” and its 100% rating (with 207 reviews). Yeah, the math doesn’t quite add up, but hey, it’s RT’s Golden Tomato to award, so even though it would appear that Debra Granik’s incredible film was snubbed, we can’t argue with “Roma” getting the trophy.

In a controversial pick, the Golden Tomato Award for Best New TV Series went to Julia Roberts’ “Homecoming,” which beat the first season of the HBO Emmy Award-winning series “Barry.” And coming as a surprise to absolutely zero people, the Best Returning TV Series of 2018 is “Atlanta.”
