Got a Tip?

The Russo Brothers Probably Won’t Be Doing Any Marvel Work After Two ‘Avengers’ Films

Joe and Anthony Russo are two of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. And after the record-breaking weekend their latest film, “Avengers: Infinity War,” had, the filmmaking duo has a golden ticket to do just about anything they want. Apparently, what they want to do next is develop their own studio.

According to an interview on the Empire Podcast, the brothers talked about filming ‘Infinity War,’ and where they see themselves going next, when their final Marvel film, the as-yet-untitled ‘Avengers 4,’ hits theaters next year. While they’re mum on the details, one thing is for sure – it’s not a Marvel film.

“The next film that we will direct will most likely be for our company, and most likely be a tentpole,” the Russos said. “[Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely have come on board in a very unique capacity, as what we’re calling Co-Presidents of Story. We’ve been developing inside the studio system for many years, inside networks, and we know what works about them and what doesn’t work about them.”

Together, the Russos, with Markus and McFeely, have generated billions at the box office with their two ‘Captain America’ films and the most recent ‘Infinity War.’ Clearly, the group has a knack for making films that make a ton of money at the box office. Now, instead of making money for a corporate overlord like Disney, they’d like to grow their own thing.

But their new studio isn’t only interested in producing Russo Brothers-directed films. No, they’ve also put together a few projects that are sure to raise some eyebrows. First, they’re working with The Daniels, the directing duo behind the surprise indie film “Swiss Army Man,” on their next movie. But that’s not all.

“We’re working with Matthew Carnahan on an incredible film, a very powerful emotional story. It’s a first-time directing, but he’s an amazing writer,” said the duo. Carnahan, of course, is known for his numerous television projects, most notably creating “House of Lies” for Showtime.

There’s also a new project set up at Netflix, starring ‘Avengers’ actor Chris Hemsworth, as well as another “tentpole” film from Andy Muschietti, the director best known for “It” and “Mama.”

Altogether, it looks like the Russos are capitalizing on their spotlight gained from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and using that influence to make movies that they’re interested in. Sadly, for fans of the MCU, those films don’t seem to be superhero-related, at all.
