The long-in-development “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” reboot/remake is officially on the way to production. After Legendary brought on filmmaker Fede Alvarez and his production company, Bad Hombre, to produce the new version of the horror classic, it appears that the first major step to making it a reality has been completed, as directors have been chosen.
According to Variety, filmmaking duo Ryan and Andy Tohill have been hired to helm the upcoming version of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” For those not familiar, ‘Chainsaw’ is one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time, originating in 1974 with Tobe Hooper’s classic film. From there, numerous sequels were made, and as is common in the horror genre, none of them could remotely come close to the original’s quality.
“The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want,” Alvarez said. “It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever.”

The Tohills are probably best known for their debut film “The Dig,” which played the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018. That film established the duo as one of the best up-and-coming names in genre filmmaking. And it appears that the film caught the eye of Alvarez and his company.
This new ‘Texas Chainsaw’ isn’t the first time the series has been rebooted. In 2003, Michael Bay produced a reboot of the franchise that went on to become a fairly good box office hit, spawning a prequel in 2006. Then in 2013, “Texas Chainsaw 3D” was released, serving as a bit of a loose reboot/sequel to the original film, but it ultimately failed to spark much interest. The most recent attempt to kickstart the franchise came in 2017, with “Leatherface,” which went completely under the radar for most fans.
Will the Tohills be able to capture the magic of Hooper’s iconic film? We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s clear that many have tried, with most not coming close. Let’s just say we’re hoping for the best, but groomed to expect the worst.
