Ryan Reynolds Plays Coy About Deadpool Showing Up In An 'Avengers' Film: "We'll See"

We’ve come to the point in the “Deadpool & Wolverine” interview cycle where the inevitable question comes up. It’s the question that is asked of every actor who stars in a Marvel film—will we see you in a future ‘Avengers’ film? It’s such an obvious question, it’s pretty wild to think that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman weren’t prepared for it.

Speaking in a Variety interview, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were asked about the future of their “Deadpool & Wolverine” characters. That is to say, they were asked if Deadpool and Wolverine will show up in an ‘Avengers’ film. And believe it or not, they were clearly flustered by the question and didn’t know how to respond.

“I don’t know. Yeah, we’ll see. Yeah,” replied Reynolds.

Jackman added, “Clearly, this is our first major interview of this press tour. I’m not sure how to answer.”

You have to assume this is Reynolds and Jackman doing their best to throw in some doubt that we’ll see one, or both, of them in a future MCU film. Most people assume we’ll see Deadpool interact more with the greater MCU, as he’s a very popular character. But what about Wolverine? Marvel is working on an “X-Men” film and perhaps Hugh Jackman will be willing to show up in a future project.

Things get even more opaque when Reynolds is asked if we can expect a new “Deadpool” film after the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The actor gave a response that seems honest and truthful, hinting that this one might be the last one.

“I don’t know. I could see any version of it,” said Reynolds. “I can imagine a solo movie, being part of an ensemble. I can imagine that this is also the last time. I never feel anything other than that.”

Why would Ryan Reynolds end his ‘Deadpool’ run after the forthcoming film? Well, over the course of a million interviews so far, we all know that he had difficulty coming up with a quality pitch for “Deadpool 3.” It wasn’t until Hugh Jackman came onboard that they were able to come up with something that satisfied them. So, it would make sense that perhaps Reynolds has trouble imagining how his R-rated, foul-mouthed hero would mingle with the greater MCU.

That’s pure speculation, obviously. Because if you think about things logically, you have to assume Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel Studios crew knows how popular the character is and would want him to stick around a bit more.

All that to say, we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe the biggest surprise of “Deadpool & Wolverine” is that the characters don’t make it out alive.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” debuts in theaters on July 26.
