Sean Baker Says Next Film Will Continue To Focus On Sex Work: "There Are A Million Stories To Be Told In That World"

Sean Baker is a filmmaker who likes to make films about the fringes of society. And many times, that includes a story about a sex worker, such as in “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project,” or his latest, “Anora.” It’s a world Baker feels is not only ripe with stories, but also serves a purpose in the grander scheme of things. That’s why his next movie will also center around a sex worker.

Speaking at Cannes (via Deadline), where he just premiered “Anora,” Sean Baker talked about what’s next for him. Namely, he’s got a new film he wants to work on, and it should be of no surprise to people that the project is in the world of sex work.

“It’s important to explore what sex work is in the modern age and how it applies in a capitalist society; it’s a job, a livelihood, it’s a job, it’s a career and it should be respected,” explained Baker.

He added, “In my opinion, I’m speaking for myself, be decriminalized and not in any way regulated. It’s a sex worker’s body… it’s their body and it’s up to them to decide how to use in their livelihood.”

So, why does Baker stick with the world of sex work with his films? Well, not only does he believe the job provides “a million stories” that can be told, but the filmmaker also believes that the more light is shined on sex work, the less stigma will exist.

“There are a million stories to be told in that world,” said Baker. “If there’s one intention with these films [it’s] telling human stories. It also helps remove the stigma that’s applied to this livelihood.”

Obviously, The Playlist isn’t a site that aims to eliminate the stigma of sex work and make a political statement about the job, but Baker isn’t wrong. And considering he’s one of the few filmmakers who not only includes stories about sex work, but shows it in a non-judgemental light, Baker is practicing what he preaches.

He is also a filmmaker who works fast. So if he is already set on what his next film will be, we can only assume we’ll see it sooner rather than later.
