Got a Tip?

The Search Begins In Trailer For Costa-Gavras’ Newly Restored, Oscar Winning ‘Missing’ Starring Jack Lemmon & Sissy Spacek

At the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, filmmaker Costa-Gavras, perhaps best known the thriller “Z,” arrived on the Croisette to unveil the restoration of his acclaimed 1982 picture “Missing.” It was a welcome return for the director, who first premiered his film there, and was honored with the Palme d’Or for the movie, which also saw Jack Lemmon take home an award for his performance. And it set the path for the journey to the Oscars for “Missing,” where it was nominated in four categories (including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress) and won for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now, the restoration is ready for the big screen off the festival circuit.

A new trailer has landed for “Missing,” which co-stars Sissy Spacek in the story of a father and wife who travel to Chile in the midst of political turmoil to find an American journalist who has disappeared. Here’s the synopsis from The Criterion Collection, where the film is currently available on DVD:

“Missing” is political filmmaker extraordinaire Costa-Gavras’s compelling, controversial dramatization of the search for American filmmaker and journalist Charles Horman, who mysteriously disappeared during the 1973 coup in Chile. Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek give magnetic, emotionally commanding performances as Charles’s father and wife, who are led by U.S. embassy and consulate officials through a series of bureaucratic dead-ends before eventually uncovering the terrifying facts about Charles’s fate and disillusioning truths about their government. Written and directed with clarity and conscience, the Academy Award–winning “Missing” is a testament to Costa-Gavras’s daring.

“Missing” opens in France on October 26th, and we’ll keep our eyes peeled for a U.S. date, and will assume that Criterion will be upgrading their edition of the movie to Blu-ray soon, with the new restoration.
