Sebastian Stan Calls His Talking Penis Scene In ‘Pam & Tommy’ An "Intimate Buddy Conversation"

Without even going into spoilers or knowing too much about the series, all it takes is one watch of the trailer for “Pam & Tommy” to know the Hulu series is going to be wild. Hell, the story on paper is almost too strange to believe. But, as is revealed in a new Variety profile, what you see on screen is probably wilder than you are even preparing for, including an appearance from a talking penis.

Speaking to Variety, “Pam & Tommy” star Sebastian Stan talked about what is likely going to be one of the most popular scenes in his series, and perhaps of all of 2022. It’s a scene where Tommy Lee (Stan), infamous rockstar and sex-tape costar with Pamela Anderson (Lily James), talks to his penis. Literally. The best part is that his penis (voiced by Jason Mantzoukas) talks back.

Why is Tommy Lee talking to his penis in the series? Well, as series co-writer Robert Siegel revealed, the scene actually comes from Lee’s own autobiography. So, really, it’s not all that crazy to include.

“As much as I’d like to take credit for that, I was simply adapting a chapter from [Lee’s] memoir,” Siegel says. “I think it might be a first . There was gentle pushback because you’ve got to push back a little when a talking penis is presented to you. But Hulu was extremely supportive.”

So, what was it like for Stan to film a scene where he’s talking to his, uh, member?

“By the end of it, I treated it like it was an intimate buddy conversation that one might have when they’re falling in love,” he said.

Director Craig Gillespie probably had the hard… err, most difficult job of all for this scene, which he said is “awkard” to create. You see, it’s not just a talking penis. It’s a full-on character.

“You’ve got four puppeteers working with an animatronic penis,” he said. “And then, how much is too much, and do you start to lose his emotional torment of what’s going on? Hopefully, it works.”

We’ll all get to see the scene when “Pam & Tommy” premieres on Hulu on February 2.
