We were just talking around the Playlist water cooler this morning about how good the “Rogue One” trailer is, and how much of a bummer that this bad buzz of late is. Gareth Edwards is a massive talent, the cast is terrific, and that teaser suggested a take on the “Star Wars” universe that’s fresh while adhering to its predecessors.
It could be that the buzz is justified, but it could also be that Disney execs panicked after “Batman V. Superman” was poorly received and decided that the film was going to be ‘too dark’ — studios are naturally reactionary creatures, and their reactions aren’t always good ones.
We’ll see in about six months, but in the meantime, EW have debuted a bunch of new images from the movie. You can check out a selection below, and head over there for the rest. Meanwhile, the site have also confirmed that 85-year-old James Earl Jones will be reprising to voice Darth Vader, who has a role in the film. Producer Kathleen Kennedy says he’ll be used “sparingly,” but “at a key, strategic moment, he’s going to loom large.”
The same piece also drops some further information on the main villain, Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Orson Krennic, a rival of Vader’s within the Empire trying to use events to gain favor with the Empire. You can read more about him and Vader at Entertainment Weekly, and see the film when it opens on December 16th.
