Shailene Woodley To Star In New Janis Joplin Biopic

It appears Shailene Woodley is trying to do something that many people have tried and failed to do previously—bring Janis Joplin’s life to the big screen.

According to a report from Variety, Shailene Woodley is set to star in a Janis Joplin biopic that will shoot in California. The report isn’t so much about the film itself than it is about the tax credits the film is going to receive to shoot on the west coast. The film is expected to begin production soon and will shoot for 30 days.

As mentioned, there have been many who have tried to bring Joplin’s life to the big screen over the years, but there hasn’t been a major film that has succeeded. For those unaware, Joplin was a major musical force in the late-‘60s, but her fame was short lived, as she tragically died at the age of 27.

Woodley has been a very busy actor over the past several years. Last year alone, she had multiple film projects release, including “Ferrari,” “Dumb Money,” “Robots,” and “To Catch a Killer.” 2023 also saw the release of a TV series she was part of titled “Three Women.”

Since the report is mainly about the tax credits, it didn’t go into detail about who would serve as director on the new film. It doesn’t even mention who is writing the script. But if the film was able to secure tax credits to shoot in California, you have to assume the film is pretty far along.

A release date for the project has yet to be announced.
