Kooky English director Tony Kaye has been detached and now he’s getting attached. Back in January, it was reported that the British director – still perhaps best known for his “American History X” fiasco, and the damaging 2003 Vanity Fair article about befriending and betraying Marlon Brando – had climbed on a new thriller called, “Attachment” (slightly ironic considering his latest picture is the high school drama, “Detachment” which arrives in theaters this March).
Penned by actor Christopher Denham (the writer/director of the POV horror flick “Home Movie“), “Attachment” sounds like a “Fatal Attraction” like sexual thriller only set in the world of cougars and young college students and revolves around a married mother’s fling with a younger man, which results in a scary stalker situation.
Sounds a little tawdry and direct-to-DVD-like (and or very ‘80s-like, considering the subject matter), but in the hands of Kaye, a mercurial and unpredictable figure, who knows what we might get.
Variety reports that the film has now found its lead in Sharon Stone. That in itself – the idea of pretty loony Tony Kaye trying to direct would-be diva Sharon Stone – sounds like a behind-the-scenes documentary we would love to see. No lead actor has been cast in the young student role, but there’s any number of rising names that could be a good fit. Shiloh Fernandez? Sam Clafin? If you can’t pull them out of a line-up to save your life, they just might be the exact right fit.
Though Kaye’s reputation is still of a strange mad man – recent interview footage we’ve seen seems to confirm just how odd he is – actors still seemed to be fascinated by his experimental, free-form approach. After all, his latest, “Detachment,” features Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks, James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden, Blythe Danner, Tim Blake Nelson and Bryan Cranston. Not a bad cast at all. That picture arrives in theaters on March 16th in limited release.
Still no word on what happened to Kaye’s “Black Water Transit” drama which appears to be stuck in legal limbo thanks to Ron Bergstein-run (ruined) Capitol Films which went under in 2008. That’s likely a picture that’s going to be stuck in purgatory into that ugly Bergstein/Capitol/ThinkFilms situation gets worked out, but it’s essentially been in the courts for almost four years now.
