What turns a historical figure into a legend? Shirley Chisholm defied the odds to become a force in US politics. Netflix’s “Shirley” tells the story of this American icon, showing the private moments that inspired her strength. John Ridley, the award-winning screenwriter of “12 Years a Slave,” lends his talents to the project. He takes on added duties, writing and directing this long-awaited biopic. Ridley recently helmed episodes of the mini-series “Five Days at Memorial.”

The film stars Regina King as Chisholm. King has proven time and time again that she is one of the best actresses working today. Her performance on the HBO series “Watchmen” garnered praise and became a standout TV moment. King additionally acts as producer on “Shirley.” The project takes on added significance thanks to the late Lance Reddick. In one of his last on-screen performances, this gifted actor portrays influential political figure Wesley MacDonald “Mac” Holder. A talented cast joins King and Reddick. Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, Brad James, and Reina King take on major roles. André Holland and Terrence Howard also appear.
