Shocker: Facebook Doesn’t Like David Fincher’s ‘Social Network’; Plus New Photos

The New York Times wrote a fairly interesting, if no-brainer story this weekend which basically goes like this: the makers of Facebook don’t like the David Fincher film, “The Social Network.” No shit? The Aaron Sorkin-penned film is based off the book “The Accidental Billionaires,” which is subtitled, “The Founding of Facebook A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal,” so yes, you can see why Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his company aren’t in love with the upcoming film.

What is interesting is that publicly, they’ve basically just tried to ignore “The Social Network,” but as the film gets closer to release, that may be impossible; especially since the film could generate awards-season buzz. While publicly mum, the founders of Facebook did try and work with producer Scott Rudin and the filmmakers of the film and suggested changes to the script when they were shown the script early as a courtesy, but Fincher and co. didn’t budge (“The Social Network” did not acquire the life rights to Zuckerberg and instead made the film using free speech laws).
Meanwhile, some new photos have arrived from an Andrew Garfield fansite that appear to be scans from the upcoming Film Comment issue that has the very first ‘Social Network’ review (it’s a big rave, though it’s maybe a conflict of interest too).

“The Social Network” stars Jesse Eisenberg as the film’s lead, Facebook website creator, protagonist Mark Zuckerberg; Justin Timberlake plays Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster and Plaxo, and the film also includes Rashida Jones, Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, Dakota Johnson, Brenda Song, Joseph Mazzello and Andrew Garfield as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin (he’s also been cast as the new “Spider-Man”). The picture arrives in theaters October 1 and makes its world premiere a few days earlier on September 24 at the New York Film Festival.
