‘Showing Up’ Trailer: Michelle Williams Preps For An Art Show In Kelly Reichardt’s New A24 Drama

In what was perhaps the greatest robbery of the decade, Kelly Reichardt’sFirst Cow” received a grand total of zero nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards. Boasting an impressive score of 89 on Metacritic, the film topped many critics’ end-of-year lists, even winning the NYFCC’s Best Film award, and developed a small—predominantly indie—following after its VOD distribution in July 2020. Alas, it was not to be. But the Academy will have a chance to atone next year, as her new film, “Showing Up,” is looking at a spring 2023 release via A24.

In what will be her fourth collaboration with Reichardt, Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea,” “Shutter Island”) plays a sculptor on the verge of a career-changing exhibition. As her show’s opening night draws closer, hectic relationships with friends and colleagues, together with a chaotic family life, become the new source of her inspiration. “Showing Up” also sports a stellar supporting cast, including Hong Chau (“Downsizing”), Amanda Plummer (Honey Bunny in “Pulp Fiction”), Judd Hirsch (“Independence Day”), and American rapper André 3000.

Reichardt co-wrote the script for “Showing Up” with Jon Raymond, who has worked on many of Reichardt’s previous films, including “First Cow,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” and “Night Moves.” Reichardt also teamed up with her long-time production team of Neil Kopp, Anish Savjani, and Vincent Savino.

In our review of “Showing Up” from this year’s Cannes, we called it a “beguiling film” and said, “Consciously, as Reichardt slowly, quietly, gently plies the clay of her tensions and emotionally sophisticated subjects, there’s at least tactile warmth to it all. Its unconscious mind, however, contains multitudes that may absorb like a great piece of art you may not fully comprehend but are mesmerized with nonetheless.”

“Showing Up” will open in theaters sometime in the spring of 2023 via A24. Watch the new trailer below.
