Now’s the time of year when we start to see those early 2018 film festival standouts finally getting their due in theaters. One of our favorites from this year’s Sundance Film Festival is “Skate Kitchen,” and thanks to Magnolia Pictures, the film is finally hitting theaters later this summer.
In the first trailer for the film, we meet a group of skaters collectively known as Skate Kitchen as they travel around New York City causing all sorts of chaos and generally doing what a skateboard crew does. However, contrary to what many think when they imagine a group of skateboarders, this isn’t some group of boys causing trouble. No, Skate Kitchen is a group of young women who have forged an incredible bond over their love of skateboarding.

In our Sundance review of the film, Kimber Myers raved, “As fearless as its characters, ‘Skate Kitchen’ is a feminist fist middle finger raised toward a skateboarding world that often doesn’t leave room for girls and women to succeed or even to simply have fun.”
“Skate Kitchen” stars Jaden Smith, along with Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Kabrina Adams, Ajani Russell, Jules Lorenzo, Brenn Lorenzo, Hisham Tawfiq, and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
“Skate Kitchen” will be released by Magnolia Pictures on August 10.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
In the first narrative feature from The Wolfpack director Crystal Moselle, Camille, an introverted teenage skateboarder (newcomer Rachelle Vinberg) from Long Island, meets and befriends an all-girl, New York City-based skateboarding crew called Skate Kitchen. She falls in with the in-crowd, has a falling-out with her mother, and falls for a mysterious skateboarder guy (Jaden Smith), but a relationship with him proves to be trickier to navigate than a kickflip. Writer/director Crystal Moselle immersed herself in the lives of the skater girls and worked closely with them, resulting in the film’s authenticity, which combines poetic, atmospheric filmmaking and hypnotic skating sequences. SKATE KITCHEN precisely captures the experience of women in male-dominated spaces and tells a story of a girl who learns the importance of camaraderie and self-discovery.
