Got a Tip?

G.I. Joe Lives! A Follow-Up To ‘Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins’ Is Now In Development

The “G.I. Joe” franchise is one of the most fascinating comeback stories in recent years. Despite a mixed-reception, we got not one, but two films based on the Hasbro line of toys (including a film starring Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis). Nearly a decade after the last film was released, and with about as much cultural impact as “Avatar,” we are supposed to get the franchise’s first spin-off, “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” later this year. But quarantine or not, nothing can stop Coba and the G.I. Joes, because even before “Snake Eyes” sees the light of day, a sequel was already announced.

THR reports that Paramount and Hasbro are already in negotiations with “Seberg” screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to pen the new “G.I. Joe” movie (they also did uncredited re-writes on “Snake Eyes”). Lorenzo di Bonaventura will also return to produce the film after having produced both “Snake Eyes” and the “Transformers” movies for Hasbro. The film is being described as “not quite a sequel but rather an expansion to take audience goers deeper into the world of Joe.”

It seems like Paramount is going all-in on the Hasbro property, presumably hoping it leads to another “Transformers” level of global success even despite the negative critical reception. But will audiences connect to the reboot of a franchise that already had two movies, neither of them with much cultural impact? It remains to be seen if “Snake Eyes” will be able to sustain a whole franchise.

As for “Snake Eyes,” the film stars “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout Henry Golding stars as the titular anti-hero and mysterious member of the G.I. Joe anti-terrorist team. The film is directed by “Red” director Robert Schwentke and written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, who wrote the live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast“.
