Sofia Coppola Details Her New Bill Murray Film 'On The Rocks' & Teaming With A Streaming Service

While the world continues to deal with the chaos stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still plenty of things in the realm of film to be excited about, including the upcoming project from Sofia Coppola, titled “On the Rocks.” And in a new interview with 92Y and Annette Insdorf (via IndieWire), the filmmaker finally sheds some light on her upcoming project, and what roles the stars Bill Murray and Rashida Jones play.

“This is Bill Murray and Rashida Jones,” Coppola said. “Yes, they play father and daughter, and she’s married to Marlon Wayans, a successful businessman who is traveling a lot and has a beautiful assistant. [Rashida’s character] has suspicions. The dad, who’s kind of a sophisticated playboy, gets her paranoid because he’s seeing men through his point of view. It’s sort of the clash between the two generations and her being a young woman and he’s a gentleman of another generation.”

She added, “It’s kind of the clash of how they look at relationships and also how your relationship with your parent affects your relationships in your life. We finished a little while ago. It’s the two of them as a father and daughter sort of on a little adventure to spy on her husband. It’s a lot of them talking about life and men and women over martinis in New York.”

“On the Rocks” isn’t just significant for its cast and filmmaker, but the film is also interesting because it marks the first project from the partnership between A24 and Apple TV+. Before the latter service launched last fall, the indie studio and tech company came to an agreement to produce and distribute a series of films.

As for how she views the creative ways filmmakers can take advantage of streaming platforms, Coppola explained that the idea that folks aren’t worried about the length of a project, or if it’s broken up into parts or episodes is what allows for more freedom.

“…I think it’s interesting because you’re so open to, you know, trying different things,” the filmmaker said. “I think in that way it’s exciting, but at the same point I don’t really see it as..it’s not so much cinema [in its traditional sense], to me it’s a different thing. But I think it’s interesting.”

It’s unclear how “On the Rocks’ will be released. As mentioned, the film is the first that is spawned from the collaboration between A24 and Apple TV+. It’s been reported that Apple is interested in doing full theatrical releases of its films, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps Coppola’s film will find its way directly onto streaming options? We’ll just have to wait and see.
