'Someone Great' Trailer: Surprisingly Hilarious Netflix Rom-Com Stars Gina Rodriguez & Lakeith Stanfield

In the seemingly never-ending debate over whether or not a streaming film is still a “real film,” there is one thing that most people can agree on – Netflix and its streaming brethren provide filmmakers with more opportunities to make art. And while you may not think a rom-com is “art,” there’s no denying that the upcoming Netflix original film “Someone Great” is the prime example of why a streaming service is a great option for filmmakers.

After you watch the trailer for “Someone Great,” it’s clear that the film seems to be a great mixture of the modern, adult female-led buddy comedy and typical rom-com, with a really great cast. But it’s also obvious that if Netflix and other streaming services didn’t exist, the film would probably never get the proper budget or distribution it deserves.

The film focuses on one woman’s struggle dealing with the dissolution of her long-term relationship due to her moving across the country. Helping her (or attempting to, at least) are her two best friends. Where normal studios would probably pass on this project is the fact that the film is led by a cast featuring predominantly people of color, with at least one queer character, and plenty of raunchy dialogues and situations. This is not your four-quadrant “girl gets bonked on the head and hilarity ensues” romantic comedy.

Oh yeah, and the cast, while great, doesn’t feature Rebel Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, or Jennifer Lopez. Instead, the film stars Gina Rodriguez, DeWanda Wise, Brittany Snow, and Lakeith Stanfield. Definitely a much better option, with Stanfield and Rodriguez on the verge of superstardom, Snow as a breakout star of the “Pitch Perfect” series, and Wise turning heads on the Spike Lee series “She’s Gotta Have It.

A rom-com might not be your cup of tea, but there’s no way you can’t see just how lucky film fans are for having an option like Netflix, which is willing to take a film like this, give it a good budget, and release it globally.

“Someone Great” will hit Netflix on April 19.

Here’s the synopsis:

Aspiring music journalist Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) has just landed her dream job at an iconic magazine and is about to move to San Francisco. Rather than do long distance, her boyfriend of nine years (Lakeith Stanfield) decides to call it quits. To nurse her broken heart, Jenny gathers up her two best friends, Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow), for one outrageous last adventure in New York City. From writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (creator of MTV’s Sweet/Vicious), SOMEONE GREAT is a hilarious and heartfelt story of friendship, love, and what it means to let go of your twenties and enter adulthood.
