Sure, all the superhero movie news surrounding Sony lately is about their expansion of the Spider-Verse films. But just as the studio continues to milk their Marvel property, they are also working to build their own shared universe thanks to Valiant Comics. They’ve already announced that Vin Diesel will be starring in the upcoming “Bloodshot,” and the next film that is being developed in the shared universe is based on the hit Valiant comic book series “Faith.”
According to Deadline, Sony has signed writer Maria Melnik to write the upcoming adaptation. Of course, for many, Faith is not a household name like Iron Man, Superman, or Batman, but she could become a culturally important hero, much like Wonder Woman or the upcoming Captain Marvel. You see, “Faith” tells the story of Faith Herbert, a geeky, fan-fiction-writing, writer who has telekinetic powers. She also happens to be one of the only plus-sized female superheroes around. And certainly, if Sony does produce the film, the character would be the first plus-sized female superhero in film.
Melnik is a writer on the rise, with her first major feature film, “The Maze,” seeing release in February. She also has experience working on the TV series, “Counterpart” and “American Gods.” There’s no other talent attached to the film, as of now.
As mentioned, “Faith” would join “Bloodshot” as the first two films being developed as part of the expanding Valiant film universe. “Bloodshot” stars Diesel, along with Eiza Gonzalez, Sam Heughan, and Toby Kebbell. The film will be directed by Dave Wilson, who is best known as a trailer director for a variety of video games, as well as a visual effects supervisor on “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” “Bloodshot” will mark his feature directorial debut.
There’s no word on when “Faith” might hit theaters. However, with “Wonder Woman” bringing in a ton of money for Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” set to be another huge hit, “Faith” could be just what Sony needs to help launch the Valiant Universe.
