So, that moustache. We presume (hope) that Michael Cera is growing that disturbing looking thing for the now currently untitled "Magic Magic" and not for its, uh…fashionability. Either way, we're just glad to hear this project is moving forward, because it sounds promising.
Building up for much of last year, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has snapped up domestic rights to the film, which will be rolling in front of cameras this spring. Co-starring a strong cast that features Juno Temple, Emily Browning and Catalina Sandino Moreno, the story will follow "a girl vacationing with her friends in a remote area of Chile who slowly starts losing her mental faculties. She tries to get her friends' attention, but they ignore her until it's too late." So yeah, it's a step outside the familiar framework for Cera, who we had been told was learning Spanish for the movie. And when we spoke to Juno Temple at TIFF last fall, she shed more light on the project.
"I play a young girl from America, and her and her best friend go to Chile…Michael Cera is an American boy who’s been living in Chile for a while so he’s kind of become Chilean and we go and have this adventure there. And my best friend’s visa gets stolen, so she has to go and fix that in the capital, and I get left on my own with this family. I don’t really know them, and my character loses her mind in a scary way. It’s an extraordinary script. Again quite dark, but it has humor in it too. And it’s a brilliant role," Temple explained.
The movie will go in front of cameras this spring in Chile with "The Maid" director Sebastian Silva at the helm. No word which Sony shingle will handle it but if it's got awards/arthouse potential they'll shuffle it to Sony Pictures Classics, and if not…Screen Gems is always there to pick up the slack. [THR]
