After years of waiting for “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” fans finally have a substantial look at the animated sequel—just not remotely in the way its filmmakers intended. Unfinished footage from the highly anticipated third Spider-Verse film leaked online Friday, prompting co-writer and producer Chris Miller to publicly express his frustration over seeing incomplete material circulating on social media.
“Not a fan of leaks of unfinished, not fully rendered footage,” Miller wrote on Twitter after the footage began spreading.
The material circulating across social media appears to be the footage Sony Pictures Animation presented behind closed doors at CinemaCon in April. The package combines an extended scene from the beginning of the movie with a faster sizzle reel of footage from throughout the sequel, before ending on the film’s June 18, 2027 theatrical release date. Sony has reportedly begun aggressively issuing takedowns as copies continue to spread online.
Spoilers for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” follow. The footage picks up almost immediately after that film’s cliffhanger, with Miles (voiced by Shameik Moore) stranded on Earth-42 and confronting the alternate Miles Morales (Jharrel Jerome), who became the Prowler in a universe without its own Spider-Man. After escaping captivity, Miles is seen navigating the larger multiversal crisis while Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya) reminds him of everything stacked against him: saving his father, defeating the Spot, and staying ahead of Miguel O’Hara and the Spider-Society.
The leaked footage also includes Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), and Miles’ mother Rio (Lauren Vélez), among others, along with another showcase for the franchise’s groundbreaking, cutting-edge animation styles.
Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson direct “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham writing the screenplay. The third film concludes the trilogy that began with 2018’s Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and continued with 2023’s “Across the Spider-Verse.”
The leak is another unwanted headache for Sony’s Spider-Man operation after footage from the live-action “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” also surfaced prematurely earlier this year. For now, however, Sony has not officially released the “Beyond the Spider-Verse” trailer publicly, but that could easily change given the producer/co-writer’s understandable disappointment at unfinished, unsanctioned footage leaking online.
“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” opens in theaters June 18, 2027.
