‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Shatters Tuesday Box Office Record En Route To Big Holiday Opening

You don’t normally see too many films open on a Tuesday. However, Sony decided yesterday was the perfect day to launch its latest Marvel Studios collaboration, “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and rather unsurprisingly, the move is paying off handsomely.

According to estimates (via Deadline), Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ sequel has earned $39.3 million in just its first day. That total is incredible considering the day of the week, and in fact, is the new Tuesday record-holder. ‘Far From Home’s’ $39.3 million was plenty to best the previous Tuesday record of $35 million set, appropriately enough, by Sony’s own “The Amazing Spider-Man” back in 2012.

After its $35 million opening in 2012, ‘Amazing’ went on to earn a respectable $137 million domestically in its first six-day run. However, predictions for “Spider-Man: Far From Home” have the film eclipsing $150 million over the same time frame, with some being more bullish on that number than others.

Unlike Christmas or Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July isn’t a massive movie-going holiday. Sure, there’s definitely an uptick, but considering its the middle of the summer and most people tend to want to spend the holiday outdoors, going to the theater doesn’t hold the same appeal as it does when you’re escaping family and colder weather in the fall and winter months. That being said, Sony’s release of ‘Spider-Man’ on July 2, versus the more common July 3, means that the studio will reap the benefits of one extra day before Independence Day.

The reviews for “Spider-Man: Far From Home” are surely helping the strong buzz the superhero film has going into the weekend. Currently, the Sony film sports a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling near-universal approval from critics. And judging by early fan reaction, the MCU faithful are eating it up also.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” is in theaters now.
