Lionsgate Has Decided Against Opening A 'John Wick' Shooting Ride In Downtown NYC

Earlier this summer, the big theme park attraction news seemed to revolve around the massively popular opening of “Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge” at Disneyland (and soon Disneyworld). The attraction continues Disney’s long history of bringing successful film franchises to life at its own theme parks.

Even though Lionsgate doesn’t have a theme park of its own, the studio was hoping to bring its films to life in New York City’s Times Square. However, after some consideration, the studio has officially pulled the plug. And when you hear about what it was going to offer, it’s likely a good idea that this didn’t come to fruition.

According to THR, Lionsgate has scrapped plans for a variety of attractions that would have been launched in Times Square later this year. Those plans included a “Hunger Games”-themed bakery, a “Divergent”-themed obstacle course, and a “Mad Men” dining experience. Even though the ideas of a bakery based on a long-finished YA film series, an obstacle course inspired by a defunct franchise, and a restaurant based on a prestige drama series that ended years ago seem terrible enough, the award for the worst idea goes to the studio’s plans for a “John Wick” adventure.

Lionsgate reportedly had plans to capitalize on its “John Wick” franchise, that is three movies in and more popular than ever before, by allowing Times Square patrons the chance to engage in a shooting ride where they kill bad guys in much the same way Keanu Reeves dispatches of people in the film series. Yes, you read that right. One of the biggest studios in Hollywood thought it would be a good idea to open a shooting simulator in downtown New York City where people murder randos with guns. Oof.

Thankfully, it doesn’t appear this is actually going to happen. At least, not yet. You see, Lionsgate is moving forward with a theme park “land” that is set to open at a South Korean park in 2020.
