'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Creative Team Knew Far Less About 'Avengers: Endgame' Than You'd Think During Production

After you watch “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” you’ll quickly realize that so much of the film is predicated on the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” The two films are so intertwined, you would assume that filmmaker Jon Watts and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were given the entire script of ‘Endgame’ before beginning work on their Spidey sequel. According to those who worked on ‘Far From Home,’ that was most definitely not the case.

Speaking to THR, one of the editors of ‘Far From Home’ gave a quick rundown of how much ‘Endgame’ information was given to the team and how that affected the creation of the film. Not only that, there was so much information to protect, Marvel Studios didn’t even trust the people making the ‘Spider-Man’ film to know it all too early. Instead, waiting for a special screening for the full film to reveal itself.

“They did show us ‘Endgame’ early, but way into the process on this film,” said ‘Far From Home’ Co-editor Dan Lebental. “At a certain point we had our conceptions of what ‘Endgame’ was but then I saw it. ‘OK. We need to make a few adjustments.'”

The report says that the team behind ‘Far From Home’ was given two pieces of information. One is that Tony Stark sacrifices himself to save the universe. And two, there is a five-year jump between the first snap and the second, leading to a lot of the hijinks you’ll find in ‘Far From Home.’

According to Lebental’s co-editor Leigh Folsom Boyd, it was assumed that it wasn’t just Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff that died tragically. They thought there was a lot more death and destruction, which led to ‘Far From Home’ having a much darker tone.

“We did have to adjust it to feel light, and then it became really make it the father-son connection between Tony Stark and Peter,” added Lebental.

With all the secrecy surrounding “Avengers: Endgame,” it’s almost hilarious and shocking that not even the first time to come out after the film knew the ending before a screening. Obviously, the folks at ‘Far From Home’ were given enough time to adjust, and thankfully so. But it still goes to show that Marvel Studios doesn’t mess around when it comes to spoilers.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” arrives in theaters on July 2.
