UPDATE: Just kidding, the revised numbers have come out, and apparently, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” actually did beat “Avengers: Infinity War” with $260 million domestically. So, you can read the original post below, as most of the speculation still stands.
Coming into the weekend, everyone knew “Spider-Man: No Way Home” would break pandemic-era box office records. Previously, the biggest debut was with “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” which earned $90 million over its first three days back in October. Many predicted ‘No Way Home’ would shatter the overall box office pandemic-era record held by “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which earned $224 million during its theatrical run. But no one expected the latest “Spider-Man” sequel from Sony to obliterate those records so quickly and then position itself on the all-time debut list.
According to box office estimates for this weekend, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” earned an amazing $253 million over its first three days. Yes, it earned more than the entire domestic run of ‘Shang-Chi’ in a matter of one weekend. Not only did the film absolutely crush every other debut in 2021, ‘No Way Home’ is in elite box office debut territory, earning the third biggest domestic debut…ever.
While still quite a bit behind “Avengers: Endgame” ($357 million), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is sitting comfortably in third place, beating “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($248 million) and coming within a hair of overtaking “Avengers: Infinity War” ($258 million). So, not only did ‘No Way Home’ give a shot in the arm to the theatrical exhibition industry this weekend, but many are wondering if it’ll be the film that actually succeeds in finally bringing people back to cinemas. (Obviously, the omicron variant is also going to play a factor.)
So, what does the future hold for the film? Well, it’s almost assuredly going to hit $1 billion worldwide, as it earned an incredible $587 million globally over the three-day period. And that’ll be the first billion-dollar release since 2019. But will it actually trend closer to “Avengers: Infinity War” and creep past $2 billion? It’s far too early to tell, as the pandemic will definitely play a factor in how much the film earns over the holiday period.
However, when you look at the schedule of films over the next few weeks, the only real blockbuster in sight could be “The Matrix Resurrections,” but that film is also getting the HBO Max release, which will definitely mean many folks will skip the theatrical experience and just stream the film next week. There’s also “The King’s Man,” but that film is R-rated and that franchise has never put up any numbers that could threaten a Marvel movie. All that to say, the film should have fairly clear sailing over the next few weeks, and if the audience continues to show up over the holiday, who knows how high the ‘Spider-Man’ sequel will go?
