Got a Tip?

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’: Tom Holland Says Upcoming Sequel Is Like “The End Of A Franchise”

The live-action film rights surrounding the Marvel character, Spider-Man, is a complicated situation. Sony owns the rights and distributes the new live-action films, but the studio struck a deal with Marvel Studios to produce those new films and integrate them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But after the upcoming ‘No Way Home’ (and reportedly one more non-‘Spider-Man’ MCU film), it would appear the future of Tom Holland’s iteration of the Webslinger isn’t very clear. And according to the actor, that means treating ‘No Way Home’ as a de facto franchise conclusion.

Speaking to EW about the release of the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Tom Holland, who stars as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, talked about the future of the franchise. And though he’s not saying one way or another that Spidey will be leaving the MCU for good, it’s clear the actor (and everyone else involved) is treating the third Marvel Studios-produced ‘Spider-Man’ film as an ending, of sorts.

“We were all treating [‘No Way Home’] as the end of a franchise, let’s say,” Holland explained. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the ‘Homecoming’ trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [‘No Way Home’] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”

As mentioned above, the big question is what will happen to the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise after ‘No Way Home?’ Sony clearly would love for Holland’s Peter Parker to come to the newly launched “Venom” and “Morbius”-led Spider-Verse, which is seemingly detached from the MCU for all intents and purposes. But if Sony does that, will fans lose interest since there’s no Avengers hanging out with the young Spidey? The safe bet is to continue the relationship with Marvel Studios and keep “Venom” and “Spider-Man” franchises tangential, always just teasing a crossover but never delivering. But is that something that interests Marvel Studios? Lots of questions and no answers.

One thing Holland says is absolutely true and can’t be debated—after ‘No Way Home,’ the “Spider-Man” franchise needs to a bit of a reset. The size and scope of the new sequel seem to lead to a story that feels like a mountain top that can’t be reached again. So, perhaps a bit of a “Spider-Man” pause is in order? Give the character a break, age him up and put him in college, and make the films a bit different than the Marvel Studios products.

Who am I kidding? Sony isn’t going to pause anything. “Spider-Man” is going to exist on the big screen every two or three years come Hell or high water. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” debuts in theaters on December 17. You can see two new images from the film from EW below:
