What else is there to say about “Squid Game” at this point? There’s the legendary viewing numbers, the 14 Emmy nods, including the first Asian director to win Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. And the overnight stardom of actor Lee Jung-jae and director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Is there any way Netflix surpasses the popularity and acclaim of 2021’s first season?
The streamer is certainly going to try, and its showcase at Geeked Week 2024 had a new special teaser for “Squid Game” Season 2, which premieres this December. This new trailer doesn’t feature anything new for the show’s fans, but it does hint at how Lee Jung-jae’s Player 456 gets roped back into the strange survival game he won three years earlier.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Squid Game” Season 2, courtesy of Netflix:
Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.
Lee Jung-jae returns to star in “Squid Game” Season 2, with Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo also reprising their Season 1 roles. New cast members this season include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.
Hwang again helms “Squid Game” as director, writer, and producer on Seasons 2 and Season 3. Firstman Studio produces the upcoming seasons, with Kim Ji-yeon also on board as an executive producer.
“Squid Game” Season 2 premieres on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Watch the Geeked Week 2024 special teaser below (and stay tuned for longer trailers in the coming weeks).
