Stanley Tucci Says Role In ‘Captain America’ Is “One Of The Greatest Roles” He’s Ever Had

Over the years, there have been many big stars who appear in smaller roles in Marvel Studios films. One of those is none other than Stanley Tucci, who did it before the MCU was this mammoth beast, appearing in “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Now, as he reflects on his career, he ranks that experience as one of his favorites.

Speaking to Variety, while promoting his most recent role in the awards season juggernaut, “Conclave,” Stanley Tucci brought up his appearance in “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For those that don’t remember, Tucci played Dr. Abraham Erskine, the scientist who develops the Super Soldier Serum and uses it on Steve Rogers, turning him into Captain America. It’s a short-lived role because the character was killed fairly early on in the film, but for Tucci, it’s still one of his “greatest roles.”

“I loved ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ it was one of the greatest roles and jobs I’ve ever had,” said Tucci. “I was there for three weeks and had a wonderful time, and I also loved playing that character. I was cast as a 70-year-old man at the age of 50, so that was disturbing, but that’s all right; I was flattered and insulted at the same time … You have to mix it up, as they say.”

It’s a little shocking to see Tucci talk about “Captain America: The First Avenger” in such glowing terms. This is an actor who has appeared in a number of major, beloved projects, but he considers his Marvel Studios stint as “one of the greatest roles” he’s ever had. Makes you wonder where he ranks “The Lovely Bones” in that discussion, as he was nominated for an Oscar for that performance. Or how about films such as “Spotlight,” which won a ton of awards when it was released.
