'Star Wars': J.J. Abrams Says "There's More To The Story" Of Rey's Parents That Will Be Revealed In 'Rise'

Every “Star Wars” film starts with the words “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” However, if you look at the main characters that drive the action of the 8 (almost 9) films in the Skywalker Saga, the galaxy seems very, very small. Once it was revealed that Darth Vader was, in fact, Luke Skywalker’s father in “The Empire Strikes Back,” suddenly the stage was set for the last name of a character becoming their most important characteristic. And according to J.J. Abrams and the cast, it appears that trend is likely to continue in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Ever since Rian Johnson’sThe Last Jedi’ revealed that the new trilogy’s lead character, Rey, doesn’t actually have famous blood running through her veins, there has been fan debate over whether or not that is actually the case. You see, fans are so used to everyone being linked by blood to someone else, that when a new character is introduced, the first question is likely “who is he/she related to?”

Well, in a new interview, these relations are discussed a bit more, specifically when it comes to Rey. As many are predicting, it would appear that J.J. Abrams isn’t going to let Johnson’s explanation for the character’s past stick, and will most likely tie her into the main saga in a meaningful, blood-related way.

“I will say there is more to the story than you’ve seen,” Abrams said about Rey’s parentage (via Good Morning America).

That quote is going to be nails on a chalkboard to some fans and a very welcome message to others. But it looks like the director isn’t just going to reveal one famous familial link in ‘Skywalker.’ When asked if new character Jannah is related to Lando Calrissian (because she has to be related to someone, right?), actress Naomi Ackie explained that ‘Rise of Skywalker’ will give her backstory. This leads many to believe that Jannah is much more important than just a new way to sell a toy.

Ultimately, it seems as if the galaxy far, far away will continue to become smaller in ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ We’ll just have to see how fans react when the film comes out on December 20.
