With Star Wars Celebration underway, Lucasfilm has announced a new “Star Wars” project is coming to Disney+ and will indeed come from the director of the most recent “Spider-Man” trilogy, the last installment of which earned a whopping $1.8 billion at the global box office.
It was announced during the Lucasfilm panel that British actor Jude Law (“Captain Marvel“) will lead a brand new original series set in the “Star Wars” universe from producers Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni. The show is coming sometime in 2023 and is titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.”
However, plot details are scarce and we’ll have to wait for further casting information. The latter two producers would suggest that show might connect to Favreau and Filoni’s current string of shows or at the very least take place in the same timeline.
Filoni states the new show is “as much for kids as ‘The Clone Wars.'” The title may suggest a couple of characters that work on a ship or repairing them. I think he’s mostly talking about tone, indicating it might be less violent than other shows on the streaming service.
Watts is part of a growing group of Marvel Studios alumni getting involved with the “Star Wars” franchise alongside folks like Taika Waititi, Peyton Reed, and Michael Waldron.
Previous rumblings suggested that the Watts show would focus on kids but that remains to be seen, but kids will indeed feature among the cast. Then again, studio head Kathleen Kennedy told Variety after the panel that Watts cited her movie “Goonies” as inspiration for the idea, and considering the involvement of multiple skeletons in the 1985 Richard Donner-directed film, the title “Skeleton Crew” could be a wink/nod to it.
